Jesus and Social Media.

Jesus and social media don’t exactly go together.

As a matter of fact, a lot of people probably get sick and tired of Jesus and social media going together. I understand that, especially because of the amount of people that seem to be virtual door-knockers and tract-holders. That’s not my thing, either.

But what if we look at it from a different perspective? What if we see if from the lens of loving and serving our neighbors, from considering them about ourselves, or from the lens of community and real life change?

The most powerful agent here is story. Instead of putting facts or how-to’s or not-to’s, we share our story, and how God is intricately involved and inviting us into His story at the same time. People are intrigued by story. People feel connected to story. Because we’re human, even if your story doesn’t really sound like mine, I can feel it. It’s more real when it involves a real life.

Bring me in. Make me feel like I’m a part of something bigger than myself, or yourself. I want to belong and feel like I can do this thing called life.

The Gospel is good news. It’s the story of God becoming a man, living and breathing and walking around in this dirt, being killed because He was so different and so radical and countercultural, and then coming back to life and breathing His forgiveness, grace, and Spirit into us.
It’s the story of belonging to God when we never deserved it. And because of Jesus, we can do this thing called life a little differently and a lot more purposely and freely.

When we utilize social media to communicate the Gospel with story, our story, we’re retelling the truth of a God who is alive and active in this world today, desiring to be with people and for them to know Him.

That’s probably better than a story about your cat.
