You didn’t do it. None of us earned this. None of us deserve it.
It’s easy to begin to think that somehow we are due this gift, this reward for our goodness, our good deeds, our right beliefs.
But we don’t deserve this.
Jesus took our place on that cross. That’s where we should have been.
You were dead because of your sins and because your sinful nature was not yet cut away. Then God made you alive with Christ, for He forgave all our sins. He canceled the record of the charges against us and took it away by nailing it to the cross.
We were dead. Dead, it says. We had no life in us. We were walking carcasses.
We can’t miss this. But we do. Every single day we miss it.
We need to be reminded again that it is because of God’s grace and mercy and love in Jesus that we are saved and set free.
He did the only thing that could ever set us free: He put His perfect life in our hopeless place.
He changed everything, wiped away all the evidence against us, and nailed it to a cross. We now get to choose life when we had no life in us.
We don’t deserve it, but God still loves us anyway. Enough to allow the cross to happen.
You and I didn’t and can’t and never will set ourselves free. He did and does and will always.
Our right beliefs won’t do it. Our good deeds won’t do it. Our worship won’t do it, and neither will our traditions or our morals.
Only Jesus on that cross.
